What is Clitoria Ternatea Flower Extract?
Clitoria Ternatea Flower Extract is a high-quality, water-soluble natural botanical extract from the petals of the butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea), which is a key natural source of intense blue colour for use in industrial dye production and has high antioxidant activity. This standardized extract is a well-known clean-label ingredient to replace artificial dyes such as Brilliant Blue FCF, providing outstanding photo and thermal stability in a variety of manufacturing conditions. The raw material is known for its high level of acylated anthocyanins, which have a specific and predictable colour-changing effect on changing pH, changing from a deep blue to a bright purple colour in acidic formulations. Supply-wise, it is carefully formulated to be as soluble and uniform as possible and is perfectly suited to large-scale production lines in the functional beverage, high-quality confectionery, and nutricosmetic sectors as a reliable, high-quality ingredient. Commercial companies use this sustainably processed botanical matrix to easily comply with global regulations on natural food additives and comply with the growing market demand for transparency and transparency of the additive-free ingredients they use in their products, which improves visual and functional properties.

Source
Butterfly Pea Flower Extract comes from the parent plant, which grows as a perennial leguminous vine in the humid, tropical lowlands of equatorial Southeast Asia and South Asia. Today, the raw material is mostly obtained by the well-developed commercial agricultural networks of Thailand, Malaysia, and India. Grown in fertile, well-drained soils under full sun, the plant has a fast growth rate and is a naturally occurring nitrogen-fixing legume, thus improving the quality of agricultural soils naturally and minimizing synthetic chemical fertilizer use. For B2B, industrial use, the coloured petals are harvested by hand or rapped using a mechanical harvesting system at full bloom and dried under controlled conditions with a standardised level of acylated anthocyanins and polyphenols. This both scalable and robust supply chain makes sure that ingredient manufacturers have a steady, sustainable supply of high-purity botanical raw materials that can support the commercial food, beverage, and personal care needs of the world in terms of contract manufacturing volumes.
Benefits
1. Premium Clean-Label Differentiation
It is a 100% natural alternative to colourings such as Brilliant Blue FCF. It enables brands to remove artificial additives from their 'ingredients' lists and directly address the demand of the regulators and consumers for clean-label, plant-based food products while meeting quality standards for appearance.
2. Exceptional Thermal and Photo-Stability
The extract contains special acylated anthocyanins, which have greater structural stability than other natural pigments. The colour strength and structural integrity will not change in the material in high-temperature industrial processes (e.g., pasteurisation) and after long periods of retail shelf life under commercial lighting.
3. Broad Processing Solubility and Uniformity
The powder is standardised and completely and quickly dissolved in aqueous phases to integrate it easily into the industrial processes. It evenly disperses throughout large-volume automated liquid processing systems, without producing granular sediment, cloudiness, and unsightly streaks in the final product matrix.
4. Neutral Sensory and Aromatic Profile
In the commercial use range of dose (normal levels of pigmentation and functional fortification), the extract does not contribute much to flavor or odor. A neutral sensory profile allows the product developer to formulate freely without changing the subtle flavor profile and fragrance of the base product.
5. Natural Light-Shielding Properties
When put into liquid pigment formulations, the molecular make-up of the pigment provides a natural light filter effect. This special feature provides protection for other light-sensitive co-ingredients (like certain vitamins and/or sensitive botanical actives) from early degradation and oxidation by the sun's rays, as seen when they are kept in straightforward packaging.
6. Global Regulatory Compliance
Blue Pea Flower Extract complies with international safety standards for natural food and cosmetic additives and is sourced from sustainable agricultural networks and produced in accordance with strict cGMP and ISO standards. The streamlined regulatory profile simplifies cross-border logistics and accelerates the time-to-market of global brands.

Precautions
1. pH Matrix Control and Stabilization
The acylated anthocyanins in the extract are very pH sensitive, ranging from deep blue (neutral pH 6.0 – 7.0) to vivid purple (acidic pH 3.0 – 4.0). The pH of the base product matrix has to be carefully standardized by the QC team to ensure that the product will have the same appearance in each and every batch.
2. Avoidance of Strong Oxidizing Agents
The industrial formulator should not attempt to add any strong oxidizers to the production line, e.g., sulfur dioxide or bleaching agents based on chlorine. The chemical compounds can break the rings of anthocyanin in an irreversible way, causing the pigment's decoloration and loss of antioxidant activity.
3. Proper Moisture-Proof Storage Handling
Blue Butterfly Pea Flower Extract sprayed according to the standard is very hygroscopic, which means it is easy to absorb water from the air. In automated hoppers, bulk containers should be stored so that they have no access to air and humidity to avoid caking, clumping, or deterioration of the raw material in the containers.
4. Optimal Temperature Sequencing
The extract shows a very good heat stability in comparison with other natural pigments, but the colour may fade over time because of high temperatures during the UHT process or boiling. This introduction of the extract is highly recommended at a cooling phase and/or post-pasteurization stage whenever possible.
5. Dissolution and Blending Sequencing
When using an automated mixing tank, the extract should first be dissolved in a small quantity of warm water and then added to the water batch in the mixing tank. If mixing is to be dry-mix, geometric blending techniques have to be used to ensure uniform distribution of the finely divided material being added.
