D-serine is mainly present in the forebrain, hippocampus, and striatum of mammals. As a neurotransmitter released by glial cells, it acts on NMDA receptors and causes signal transduction in the central nervous system. Plays an important role in synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. Serine racemase is a phosphopyraldehyde dependent enzyme that converts L-type serine to D-type serine through racemization with the assistance of ATP and Mg2+. Serine racemase may be a new therapeutic target for neurological and psychiatric disorders.
D-Serine is a fully glycine agonist synthesized and stored in astrocytes. Glutamate induces the release of D-serine from astrocytes, which acts as a co agonist of the NMDA receptor glycine binding site.

How to use d serine supplement?
D-Serine can be used as a dietary supplement in capsule or powder form. A clinical trial targeting healthy adults showed that the drug is beneficial for cognition, with a dose of 2.1 grams, while another trial had a dose of 30 milligrams per kilogram (mixed with orange juice). The most commonly tested dose is 30 milligrams per kilogram (for example, a person weighing 200 pounds takes 2.7 grams), but patients with schizophrenia use higher doses (60-120 milligrams per kilogram).

Special precautions and warnings
When taken orally: L-serine is usually ingested through food. A typical diet provides about 3.5-8 grams per day. High doses of serine may be safe when used as a drug. It is safe to take up to 25 grams of L-serine per day for up to 1 year, or 2-4 grams of D-serine per day for up to 4 weeks. Side effects may include stomach discomfort and bloating.
Taking very high doses of serine daily may not be safe, such as taking 25 grams or more of L-serine or 8 grams or more of D-serine per day. High doses may lead to increased stomach side effects and seizures.
Pregnancy and lactation: L-serine is usually ingested through food. However, there is insufficient reliable information to determine the safety of using L - or D-serine as a drug during pregnancy or lactation. Pay attention to safety and stick to moderate food intake.

benefits of D-serine supplements
Although clinical trials have shown that D-serine is beneficial for patients with schizophrenia or Parkinson's disease, it may exacerbate Alzheimer's disease, peripheral neuropathy, and osteoarthritis by overactivating glutamate NMDA receptors.
Neuroprotective benefits: D-serine has been tested in multiple clinical trials, primarily in patients with schizophrenia, but the evidence is mixed and inconsistent. It may be harmful to dementia patients or elderly individuals with overactivation of glutamate receptors.
Aging and related health issues: Although a small clinical trial has shown that D-serine is beneficial for Parkinson's disease patients, preclinical studies suggest that it may increase oxidative damage to the brain and exacerbate neuropathic and osteoarthritis pain.
Safety: Many clinical trials have reported good tolerance to D-serine with few side effects, but a small study found a high incidence of proteinuria.
