L-tyrosine

L-tyrosine

L-tyrosine is an amino acid present in most foods. According to the World Health Organization, most adults require approximately 1 gram (14 milligrams per kilogram of body weight) of L-tyrosine per day to maintain normal bodily functions. It is a so-called 'non essential' amino acid because your body can produce it from another amino acid called phenylalanine. However, this does not mean that supplementing L-tyrosine is not helpful.

Tyrosine is a non essential amino acid synthesized by the human body from another amino acid, phenylalanine. It is an essential component for producing several important brain chemicals (called neurotransmitters), including adrenaline, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Neurotransmitters help nerve cells communicate and affect emotions. Tyrosine also helps to produce melanin, which is the pigment that determines hair and skin color. It helps with the function of organs responsible for producing and regulating hormones, including the adrenal gland, thyroid gland, and pituitary gland. It is involved in the structure of almost every protein in the body.
Tyrosine deficiency is rare. Low levels of tyrosine are associated with hypotension, hypothermia, and hypothyroidism. But this does not mean that taking tyrosine supplements will alleviate these conditions.

Side Effect

When taken orally: Tyrosine is usually ingested through food. Taking tyrosine as a medication in the short term may be safe. Taking a daily dose of up to 150 mg/kg for 3 consecutive months seems safe. Some people may experience side effects such as nausea, headache, fatigue, and heartburn.
When applied to the skin: Tyrosine may be safe to apply to the skin.

L-tyrosine is an amino acid found in many foods, and the human body can also synthesize this amino acid from phenylalanine.
L-tyrosine is a precursor of catecholamine neuromodulators, including dopamine and norepinephrine. These are important for alertness, attention, impulse control, motivation, emotions, and more.
When your brain works overtime (such as during sleep deprivation or performing highly challenging tasks), it will pass catecholamines faster than usual. Supplementing with L-tyrosine can help maintain optimal catecholamine signaling during these times, supporting cognition and motivation.
People's response to supplementing L-tyrosine varies, which may depend on individual characteristics (e.g. it appears to be particularly beneficial for those lacking motivation).
In some cases, supplementing L-tyrosine can improve mood.
L-tyrosine may not have a significant impact on most cases of depression, schizophrenia, ADHD, or Parkinson's disease.
