What is Pancrelipase?
Pancrelipase (or pancreatin) is a mixture of porcine-derived lipase, amylase, and protease enzymes used to treat pancreatic enzyme insufficiency caused by conditions like cystic fibrosis or pancreatitis. It replaces natural enzymes to improve digestion and nutrient absorption. Side effects include constipation, nausea, or abdominal cramps. It must be taken with meals.
Everything You Need to Know
What is pancreatin used for?
Who should not take pancreatin?
You are allergic to this medication or any of the other ingredients of this medication including pork and/or pork protein. This preparation contains ingredients from a pork source. You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Can pancreatin help with weight loss?
Despite the theoretical benefits, there is limited clinical evidence to support the use of pancreatin for weight loss in individuals without pancreatic insufficiency.
Is there a downside to taking digestive enzymes?
Over-the-counter digestive enzymes
Alpha-galactosidase can help break down a type of non-absorbable fiber called galactooligosaccharides (GOS), mostly found in beans, root vegetables and some dairy products. GOS is known to be beneficial, but it can cause gas and bloating in some individuals.
Main Details:
Used For
Pancreatic Enzyme Replacement Therapy: It treats digestion issues from chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, or cystic fibrosis.
Digestion Support: It breaks down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates when the pancreas does not produce enough enzymes.
Reduction of GI Symptoms: It helps manage bloating, gas, and abdominal discomfort.
How to Administer
Timing: Take immediately before or with meals and snacks.
Dosage: Follow exact doctor instructions; doses may vary based on the severity of the condition.
Usage: Swallow capsules whole; do not crush or chew to avoid mouth irritation, and take with a full glass of water.

Application
Pancreatin can be used to promote esophageal tissue loosening in patients with esophageal tumors. It has also been shown to induce tumor necrosis suggesting it may aid in treatment response of esophageal cancer. It has been used in a study to assess the treatment of pancreatic cancer with pancreatic enzyme therapy.
Cystic fibrosis (CF)
Long-term inflammation of the pancreas (chronic pancreatitis)
Cancer of the pancreas
Surgeries on the pancreas
Surgeries on the upper gastrointestinal tract (gastric bypass surgery or gastrectomy)
Loose, fatty stools (steatorrhea)
Pancreatin can be useful for managing these health conditions because it can:
Help break down several key nutrients, including proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, that the body needs for energy
Help with the absorption of essential vitamins and minerals
Promote healthy weight gain and maintenance of a healthy weight
